5,000 foreigners seek or have asylum in Tajikistan – Central Asia Online.

DUSHANBE – About 5,000 foreigners, mostly those who obtained asylum or are seeking asylum in Tajikistan, are receiving help from that country’s UNHCR office, UNHCR spokeswoman Parvina Munovarova said February 21, according to AsiaPlus.tj. More than 3,300 of them have obtained refugee status in Tajikistan, she said.

“About 90% of the refugees in Tajikistan come from Afghanistan,” she said. “We also have a certain number of refugees from Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.”

An Interior Ministry commission including some members from the Health Ministry decides on asylum applications, she said, adding the UNHCR has observer status on the commission. Tajikistan has no political refugees at this time, and only President Emomali Rakhmon can grant political asylum, she said.
