Tajik Civil War amnesty proposed – Central Asia Online

Posted: May 9, 2012 in History, Tajikistan

DUSHANBE – Mukhiddin Kabiri, a member of the Tajik parliament’s lower chamber and leader of the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (PIVT), May 8 wrote to President Emomali Rakhmon requesting amnesty for imprisoned insurgents from the 1992-1997 civil war, AsiaPlus.tj reported, quoting PIVT headquarters.

Kabiri called the 15-year-long peace in Tajikistan a historic achievement not only for Tajiks but in worldwide experience. Many imprisoned insurgents from that era are elderly and in poor health, he said, asking Rakhmon to show mercy ahead of the June 27 Unity Day, which marks the end of the civil war.
