1993 Human Rights Report: TAJIKISTAN

Posted: July 29, 2012 in Tajikistan

Since the formation of the Rahmonov Government in December 1992, at least 30 journalists and broadcasters have fled Tajikistan due to well-grounded fears of political persecution or physical threats by armed members of militia forces. Since January at least 7 journalists disappeared and are presumed dead. None of the deaths can be linked directly to government forces, but the journalists’ political orientation clearly suggests the involvement of government supporters. The Ministry of Interior has not successfully investigated any of these deaths. The local procurator’s office initiated formal investigations but did not bring charges in any of the cases.
