DUSHANBE, Tajikistan —

Authorities in Tajikistan say a criminal gang that has been engaged in a standoff with government troops has broken a four-day ceasefire by attacking a police station.

The Prosecutor General’s office said Saturday that one person was injured in the overnight attack.

Clashes broke out Tuesday in Gorno-Badakhshan province as authorities sought to arrest former warlord Tolib Ayombekov, who they say was behind the killing of a top security official. Ayombekov was one of many opposition fighters in the 1990s civil war that continue to wield substantial local influence and defy the central government.

Authorities accuse him of drug trading and smuggling tobacco and precious stones.

According to the latest official figures, 17 government troops and 30 militants have been killed in fighting.
